Isn’t the hot setup still Bridgestone?

For $56 a pop for my size, I can’t recommend the Nexen N’fera SU1. Even with the shipping shit still coating them, I’m still cornering faster than my Potenza RE050A’s. I have a friend that replaced his PSS’s for them on his RS, and loves them.

RE71-R

RE 71R or BFG Rivals are the tires of the moment. R1Rs aren’t street class legal

EDIT: looks like they are legal. Still, RE71R or BFG Rival. What class are you running?

RE71R’s will be the fastest. I like star specs a bit more personally

Anything short of a 200TW tire has a tendency to shed with repeated autocross use. Really need a tire designed to be abused if autocrossing is the end game.

Nexen makes a 200TW tire but I’ve heard they get greasy when they heat up.

Depends on the class. Mostly yes, but a few classes went over to Rivals

The fastest run the RE71 or Rival 1.5. Those were the two main tires run by national competitors followed by the Nexen Sur4g

I run Falken RT615K+ tires and they wear well, but I’m a mid-pack contender on them.

True, but $56 a piece...

I’m looking at the street class rulebook and I don’t see why they wouldn’t be, as they meet the 200 treadwear requirement as well as the 7/32" tread depth requirement. Used to be 140 treadwear but they’ve been since re-designated by the manufacturer.

Am I missing anything? Only recently gaining a deeper understanding of the rulebook.

I’m expecting to be in STS since the plan is to get some BC Racing Coilovers soon. I’ve seen that SW20/21 MR2s are kind of outdated for stock competition but still can be fun with some of the allowed mods for Street Touring.

I’m trying to keep a reasonable budget while I figure out how competitive I’ll be, so I’m looking at Enkei J10 wheels , 15x6.5" or 16x7" and hopefully good tires too. I’d do RPF1s but they cost twice as much for only about a pound less per corner.

The stock 14x6s wheels that came with the car are apparently rather heavy, plus the tire options are fairly limited. Moving up to a 15 or 16 opens up the RE 71Rs and Proxes R1Rs as options.

R1Rs are street class legal. The R888s though are not.

I’m going to be trying out some 240tw Zestinos this season. They aren’t the best but they should be adequate and a bit more durable than the RE71Rs I used last season.

RE71r’s or BFG Rival 1.5 if you want to be fast. If you aren’t going to be competitive then you can go with just about anything but the Hankook RS4, Falken Azenis 615k+, or your Toyo Proxes R1R would all work.

I really like the RE71r’s for autox and track, I plan on trying the Falkens out this season (I have 2 sets of race wheels and like to run a competitive tire on one and a cheaper tire on the other).

I like my Falken RT615K+s, they’re pretty good, and cheap. (Good enough for the spec BRZ/FRS class this year)

I ran last year on my street Nitto Invo (240tw) tires and they got pretty beat up in the process. They’re greasy when they get too hot, but did OK overall. As posted yesterday, I just picked up a set of the R71Rs for this season.

I Started autocrossing with ZIIs (non star-spec) then switched to RE71Rs for last season. The ZIIs were a pretty great set of rubber to start on, but not to compete on. They communicate well, they “multitask” well (turning + accel/decel), they won’t try to kill you in the rain, and they have a relatively good lifespan (mine survived 15k miles + 8 events), but the RE71Rs were in another league.

I don’t have clear-cut back-to-back data since I installed an LSD at the same time as the RE71Rs, but they definitely played a role in pushing me up from ~45th to ~15th or better on the PAX leaderboards. The level of grip is downright silly and they communicate just as well as the ZIIs IMO, but their grip falls off pretty sharply past the limit, they’re not as good in the rain (still not bad though), and mine were spent after about 14 events + 3000 road miles.

My recommendation would be don’t cheap out on tires. I don’t know if the Proxes are any good, and I haven’t looked at prices on tires in your size in a long time to know what the delta is between the “best” and the “cheapest”.

If it’s not designed with competition in mind, i.e. it’s higher than 200TW, it has a tendency to come apart in interesting ways. Higher treadwear doesn’t lead to longer life at autox, only on the street. I had some Kumho PSS knockoffs for a few months on my Ecoboost and half of the center treadblock literally just came off the tire. Trashed with a decent amount of life left. Meanwhile, my 200TW RE-71Rs have been abused for many events and I still have a few left in them before they’re completely done. Not to mention the grip difference is extraordinary when you go to a real competition tire.

It’s a shame Hankook tried to modernize with the RS4. I’ve heard it’s a decent tire, but it’s too expensive: the RS3 it replaced was such a great tire for a really reasonable price.

One last thought: go check out roadraceautox forums and see if anyone is selling used tires. Seriously competitive drivers often get new tires for major events and sometimes will sell tires with 60-70-80% life left.

The problem is that $56 a piece sounds great until you buy 3 sets in a season because the tread disintegrated.

I tried to go cheap when I got tires for the first Mustang and they lasted all of 4 events before failing on me.

I went from RS3's to RE-71Rs, added 4 cylinders, and went from averaging around the 10th or so raw street tire time to taking top street tire a few times.

I don’t know exact numbers or anything, but I can say in the same car that the sensation of grip in RE-71Rs compared to the RS3s I had before was night and day.

Or, not popular enough that they won’t be sold out before the SSC class can get them.

I like them, as reviewers have said, they’re pretty progressive at the limits compared to most 200TW tires. They lack the ultimate grip of the RE-71Rs but are easier to learn on.
